Is Calathea Dottie easy to care?

Their care requirements are unique and critical. They are delicate. The Dottie, on the other hand, is easier to get along with than some of its more finicky cousins. Once you’ve established the ideal growth circumstances for your Calathea, it will thrive.

The Calathea needs a warm, sunny location. It is fine to grow it indoors in a partially shaded location that is kept at 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The Dottie does have a few requirements for its care:

It likes bright light, but not direct sun exposure. You can keep the Dottie in low-light conditions (given that it has sufficient enough light exposure) and it will still thrive.

It likes a cool location, but this is not critical. It will do very fine in the low 50’s degree Fahrenheit range, but it can also tolerate warmer temperatures with no ill effects as long as the humidity levels are kept below 80 percent.

It is sensitive to humidity near its leaves, so keep the humidity at around 60% during the growing season. If this number creeps above 80%, it will show signs of stress.

When plants are out of bloom, they need a rest period. Expect blooms to slow or stop during the rest season. However, if the growth has stopped and you still have beautiful leaves, then you can prune the plant. This will encourage new growth at the center of the Dottie.

The Dottie is easy to propagate from cuttings. All it needs is a small piece of stem with a leaf on it with moist potting mix (use a high-quality commercial potting mix, not Miracle-Gro) in a container that allows for good drainage and ventilation.

How often should I mist Calathea Dottie?

Misting your plants with a spray bottle on a regular basis will assist to boost humidity. Simply be cautious not to overdo it, since too much water resting on the leaves might result in fungal patches. Begin by exercising 1-2 times a week.

Arrange your Calathea on a saucer or tray loaded with stones. Misting will also help to keep spider mites at bay, since it can really help to boost humidity. I always use a more organic method to prevent spider mites on my plants by using a mixture of chili and garlic.

Place the mixture in a small bowl and then place the bowl on top of the plant. This way, you won’t be spraying your plants directly with pesticides.

Calathea Dottie is sensitive to temperatures below 55 degree F. If temperatures are cold, then you can use some of the following tips to help protect your plants from the cold. You can wrap your plants in newspaper and place them in a box with a source of heat, or you can use a heating pad underneath or around your plant.

Is Calathea Dottie an indoor plant?

Fill the saucer halfway with water and drain it through the drainage hole at the bottom of the pot. Calathea, like many tropical indoor plants, requires an area with adequate humidity.

If you have an air conditioning unit that you never use, turn it on and set it on a timer for 1 to 3 hours a day only during the period of watering. You can also purchase an orchid growing device from a pet store; these are less expensive than real orchids and often do the job just as well.

If they are outdoors, they are most likely in shade, but with limited light. If they do not receive enough light, their leaves will begin to yellow and eventually die back before their flowering period.

Calathea is not an indoor plant. They need to be placed in indirect light and watered regularly. Calatheas do not like being moved, and this type of stress can kill it quickly, so once you put one in a specific area, leave it there.

Calathea growth can be stunted if planted in pots that are too small for their root mass. Using repurposed containers is a great idea. However, when repurposing pots and saucers, make sure they have holes in the bottom for drainage.

Where do you put Calathea Dottie?

Locate in a region that receives indirect sunlight. It is ideal to be near a window facing north, east, or west. Place it in a bright location with partial shade and moderate air circulation.

Position the plant in a sunny location such as on the north side of a window facing west, east, or south so that it gets at least five hours of sunlight per day. You can also place the plant in an area that receives indirect light.

It should never be placed in a position where direct sun falls on its leaves for too long. This can cause damage to its bark and reduce flowering success. Calathea Dottie prefers indirect light; if it is too harsh, they can become bleached and develop a dull, gray appearance.

If possible, let the plant dry before transplanting. To prevent shock, remove as much of the soil as you can. Use a garden trowel to loosen the soil so that it will not hold water during transplanting. If you are growing Calathea Dottie indoors, place your pot on a tray of small stones to allow for good drainage. Place them in the shade out of direct sunlight.

Can you grow Calathea Dottie outside?

Keep them in a somewhat shady area to protect from too much sun, and place the plant in a location that has excellent drainage. Once you’ve positioned the plant, water it well and then allow the top 1/4 of the soil to dry out before watering again.

Avoid placing it near air conditioning units or other sources of strong air movement, which might damage their leaves. In the fall, move them to partial shade and water less often.

A Calathea Dottie should never be placed in direct sunlight. Do not put it close to an air-conditioning vent either because this will dry out the plant and cause it to die.

If you want to keep your Calathea Dottie outdoors, then you should place it in a location that receives indirect sunlight only.  You should also place it in location that has excellent drainage the Calathea Dottie also requires regular watering when grown outdoors.  Water it well and then allow the top 1/4 of the soil to dry out before watering again.

What is Calathea Dottie plant?

Calathea Roseopicta ‘Dottie’ is a plant with deep purple foliage and brilliant pink patterns. This plant thrives in wet and moist environments; it would thrive in a bathroom and is an all-around wonderful houseplant. Calathea Dottie is a unique, quick growing plant that is ideal for anyone wanting to grow something different.

It has pink flowers and leaves with a striking purple tint. The flower is unique in that the petals are so tightly clustered together; they look like one big bud. It can also be grown on an artificial horticultural tomato cage, but the gaps between the bars should be 2″ apart to allow for decent root growth.

Calathea plants are not toxic to animals and humans. The sap can cause a skin rash in some people, but this is nothing serious. Calathea Dottie is a plant that should be handled with the utmost care so that you don’t get the sap on your skin. If you do happen to get it on your skin, wash it off with soap and water immediately.

Why is my Calathea Dottie dying?

The most common explanation for a dying Calathea is that the soil surrounding the root ball is too dry as a result of insufficient watering or watering too lightly, causing the leaves to droop and turn brown and crispy, giving the plant a dying appearance.

Calathea Dottie is also susceptible to rot caused by overwatering; if the plant’s roots are sitting in stagnant, soggy soil, the plant will quickly die. Dead or dying leaves may indicate a fungal infection. Fungal infections can be spreading throughout the soil, so it is best to throw out any dead and dying leaves and start anew with fresh soil.

However, Calathea Dottie does not like its soil to dry out completely. Do not allow the soil to dry out, but rather, keep it slightly moist all of the time.

If you are going on vacation, you can use a moisture meter to check if the soil is dry, and then add more water when it is. If you have moved your Calathea Dottie recently, transplant shock may be the cause of the leaves turning brown or dying.

This condition will pass in about 2 weeks. If you notice a thin, white coating on the leaves, this is a basic sign of magnesium deficiency. Calathea Dottie needs to have magnesium in its soil for proper growth. Use a fertilizer that contains magnesium and water the plant with dilute coffee to provide necessary nutrients.

Calathea Roseopicta ‘Dottie’ has been known to be affected by several common diseases, most of which are caused by fungi or bacteria. Leaf spots are the most common signs of disease.

They form as a result of poor air circulation and are more prominent in stagnant, wet environments. White cottony spots on the leaves could be caused by white fly and/or scale, but if the spots are not present all of the time, you can rule out these pests.

If your plant is getting the right amount of sunlight and is placed in a healthy environment, it should thrive. Leaves can also turn brown or yellow due to over- or Underwatering or too much fertilizer.

How big does a Calathea Dottie get?

Calathea Dottie grows at a moderate rate, eventually reaching heights of around 40cm to 60cm. Calathea Dottie will bloom when it is approximately 60cm tall.  This plant should be repotted every 3 years so that it doesn’t become root bound.

If a Calathea Dottie grows too large, the leaves will begin to look sparse and straggly. When the plant is repotted it will also lose part of its root system and therefore will be unable to bloom, as well as losing most of its leaves.

It can take up to 10 years for a Calathea Dottie to bloom, so if you don’t want your plant to get too large, you should be repotting it every couple of years.

Why is my Calathea Dottie drooping?

Calathea plants generally droop when they are dry. Numerous factors, including insufficient watering, low humidity, and root injury, impair the flow of water to the cells that create turgor pressure to assist the plant in remaining upright.

If a plant is allowed to dry out to the point of wilting, it will no longer be able to support its own weight upright. When this happens, the leaves will droop.  Don’t over water your plant either because this can cause the same problem.  Water your plant lightly so it isn’t sitting in stagnant water.

Calathea Dottie Drooping (or lack of growth) could also be caused by over or Underwatering, but not watering your plant is a more common problem.  Water it until water is coming out of the bottom of the pot and then allow the soil to dry out slightly before watering again.

Calathea Dottie Drooping can also be caused when the plant is moved to another location, so if you have recently transplanted your plant, it may take a while for it to adjust.

A fungal disease called “Rhizoctonia leaf and stem rot” causes drooping leaves on Calathea. This disease is caused by a certain species of the Rhizoctonia fungus and it can spread throughout the soil.

If you notice that your Calathea Drooping (or lack of growth), could be caused by over or Underwatering, but not watering your plant is a more common problem. Water it until water is coming out of the bottom of the pot and then allow the soil to dry out slightly before watering again.

Calathea Drooping is also caused by a metallic element deficiency in the soil. To fix this problem, try fertilizing with a high-phosphorus fertilizer such as Miracle-Gro 12-4-8.

In addition to poor drainage, (which is more common than most people realize), your plant could also be suffering from too much fertilizer or salt. Calathea Dottie needs to have just the right amount of nutrients in its soil for healthy growth. Use a fertilizer that contains magnesium and water the plant with dilute coffee to provide necessary nutrients.

Is Calathea Dottie a prayer plant?

Dottie (Calathea Roseopicta ‘Dottie’) is a tropical plant that is quite easy to grow. Prayer plants are Photonastic, meaning they move in reaction to environmental stimuli such as light, temperature, and humidity.

The movement is independent of the stimuli’s location. Calathea Dottie’s circulation is dependent on the air, so in order for it to be a prayer plant, it must be properly watered and allowed to dry.

By rooting a leaf and placing it in water every day and gently pushing it down with your finger while it is submerged in the water, you will eventually have an attractive leaf that moves up and down.

You can also use a white balloon filled with helium instead of water in order to root the leaf. If you do not wish to root and grow your own leaf, you can purchase a leaf that is already rooted and watered.

Calathea Dottie is not a prayer plant. Calathea plants are Photonastic, meaning they move in reaction to environmental stimuli such as light, temperature, and humidity. The movement is independent of the stimuli’s location. Calathea Dottie’s circulation is based on the amount of air, so in order for it to be a prayer plant, it must be properly watered and allowed to dry.

How do you care for a Calathea Dottie plant?

Calathea Dottie, with her dark and pink leaves, is the gothic relative of the Calathea family. As with many other Calathea species, she can be finicky and difficult to care for, but for the same reason that we continue to collect these plants, she is truly magnificent.

Light

It is critical that your Calathea Dottie is not exposed to direct sunlight. If this plant is put in direct sunlight, the leaves will burn and the plant will suffer harm. To begin, it can cause color loss, but it can also cause significant harm. Rather than that, choose a location for it that receives moderate light and is sheltered from the sun. As a result, a room facing north or east might be an excellent choice.

Watering

Calathea Dottie are a plant that requires frequent watering; they should be kept slightly wet but not submerged. Water your Calathea Dottie about once a week, but it’s best to evaluate each plant separately.

Check the soil’s moisture content; if the top two inches are beginning to dry up, it’s time to water your plant. Additionally, you may discover that tap water is too harsh for this plant and may consider using filtered water instead.

Soil

Attempt to locate a well-draining soil. Because this plant requires frequent watering, it is critical that the soil does not become wet, therefore use a well-balanced potting mix in a pot with drainage holes. Additionally, we would recommend amending the soil with perlite.

Humidity

Calathea Dottie thrives with higher humidity conditions. If the air becomes too dry, the leaves begin to crisp, and once this occurs, the damage is irreversible. While misting your plant several times a week will help it retain moisture, investing in a humidifier is a wonderful way to combat dry air in your house.

The most popular humidifier is the Levoit model, which is available on Amazon. It has both cold and warm mist, automation, a large capacity, and a handy tiny remote control.

Propagation

Propagation is possible by root division. You will have little success attempting to take a clipping from this plant. Rather than that, wait till fresh shoots emerge from the earth.

When this occurs, carefully remove the plant from its container and gently separate the parts, taking care not to harm any roots in the process. After separating the parts, repot the old plant and transplant the new portion into its own pot using a well-draining potting mix.

Temperature

Maintain a warm environment for your Calathea Dottie. If the plant becomes too chilly or is placed near a drought, you may notice it begins to suffer.

If the air is warm, take care that it does not become too dry, as this is also detrimental to the plant. Finally, keep it away from heat sources such as fireplaces, radiators, and heating systems to avoid drying out.

Fertilizer

As with all Calathea plants, the Calathea Dottie is susceptible to fertilizer sensitivity, therefore it’s critical to dilute the plant feed you use.

Feed your plant just throughout the growing season and leave it alone during the winter. Additionally, it does not require a lot of fertilizer, and too much might burn the leaves, therefore we recommend fertilizing once a month during the spring and summer.
